Jobs were hard to find back then. People had to rely on different ways to make their lives easier. When the government passed the 18th Amendments outlawing alcohol, it was hard for people to stop there drinking. Many people enjoy drinking and rely on it to calm them down from the harsh times. Since alcohol was banned, they had to be smuggled in. People would find ways to hide there alcohol so they wouldn't be taken away. Violence on the streets increased because people wanted to drink. The closure of all alcohol related industries was the main reason behind increased unemployment. People who were hardworking are now drinking a banned substance. Police were use to prevent people from drinking alcohol than fighting other crimes. Criminal gangs were the ones who supply the alcohol. They would be fighting each other for control of the trade of alcohol. A whole black market was created around alcohol. The quality of the alcohol was poor and people started to get sick. The deaths from alcohol poisoning rose 400%, people will argue that alcohol was less easily obtainable before they banned it.
